Open enrollment is the one stretch of the year when anyone can buy an ACA Marketplace health plan without needing a special reason. For 2026 coverage, the federal window ran from November 1 through January 15 in states that use HealthCare.gov — which includes Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. Because the federal government can adjust these dates from year to year, always confirm the current deadline before you count on it.
The two deadlines that matter
Within open enrollment there are usually two dates, not one. Enroll by December 15 and your coverage typically starts January 1. Enroll between December 16 and the January deadline and coverage generally starts February 1, leaving you a month without insurance. If a January 1 start matters to you, treat mid-December as your real deadline.
What happens if you miss it
Once open enrollment closes, you can only buy a Marketplace plan if you have a qualifying life event. Losing job-based coverage, moving to a new area, getting married or divorced, having or adopting a child, or a change in income that affects eligibility can each open a Special Enrollment Period — usually 60 days from the event. You will normally need documentation, so start the process as soon as the event happens rather than at the end of the window.
Renewing is not the same as reviewing
If you already have a plan and do nothing, you will usually be auto-renewed into the same or a similar plan. That is convenient and often a mistake: premiums, networks, drug formularies, and your own subsidy amount all change from year to year. A plan that was the best value last year can quietly become the wrong one. Fifteen minutes of comparison during open enrollment is the cheapest insurance decision you will make.
What to have ready
Have your ZIP code, household size, estimated household income for the coverage year, Social Security numbers for applicants, and a list of your doctors and prescriptions. The income estimate is the number that drives your subsidy, so it deserves a few minutes of thought rather than a guess.
